Shawn O'Leary, Director of Multicultural Affairs at the Geisel School of Medicine, reflects on the impact that the school's American Indian Health experience in Minnesota has on both Dartmouth medical students and communities. O'Leary created the annual program, which is held during spring break for first-year medical students. He says that bringing talented young people there and connecting them with American Indian communities helps empower individuals. It also makes him hopeful for a future where the serious health disparities experienced by American Indians are lessened or eliminated. O'Leary is a member of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe in Northern Minnesota.
