Geisel medical students receive outstanding clinical education experiences in multiple specialties within the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt., located just 15 minutes from the medical school. The VA Medical Center, one of Geisel’s affiliated teaching hospitals, provides a rich educational experience for medical students, and many Geisel faculty members practice and conduct there as well.
The VA Medical Center campus is also home to the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is led by Geisel faculty Matthew Friedman and Paula Schnurr, and to the VA Outcomes Group, which is a division of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice at Geisel. Faculty at the Outcomes Group have gained prominence for their thought-provoking research on the effectiveness of many common medical practices.
“Each one of the veteran patients we have has unbelievable stories,” says Joe O’Donnell, a long-time physician at the VA and the senior advising dean at Geisel. “I love to learn the stories of their military time, which is very instructive to what formed them, as are the other things that count most in their lives.”
